Busy Bee

We're getting ready for a garage sale this weekend! Thanks Mom & Dad for letting us use your house! We're getting rid of a lot of duplicate houseware stuff that we have. We're also selling some random furniture and other stuff. I listed larger pieces of furniture on craigslist. I'm hoping to make a little chunk of change so I can do some things around the house! Any tips on garage sales?? I'm a first timer here . . .

I have no tips...I can go to garage sales but I can't hold them, Ken does that usually for us. Just watch your stuff and get going early...here they start before its even light!!! UGH!!!

price everything..mark it a bit high because people will always talk you down. start early then put an end time. put stuff out even if you think it won't sale..one man's trash is another's treasurer or whatever that saying is. Good luck!

Price it to GO! Make sure you have an ample amount of change. See you there!

I wish I lived near you! I need stuff! Be realistic when pricing furniture- people go to garage sales to get a deal... But don't give stuff away either..until the end, when y ou really just want to get rid of stuff.

I had a garage sale when I moved away from law school - thinking that I wanted to finally get rid of all the hand-me-down stuff and get real stuff of my own. My biggest mistake was letting a slow period (it rained a little, then let up) lull me into thinking that people weren't going to come. I started packing things up for goodwill. I missed some people who came by while I was making goodwill runs, and there was actually a rush at the end, when I didn't have much stuff left out anymore. So be patient!

Get up really early because people will be waiting on you. Make lots of coffee and if you live near a Krispy Kreme go get you some doughnuts. You will need the sugar energy cause it is a long day. But lots of fun. I haven't had a sale in quite some time but when I did it was fun. Be prepared to drop you prices. Yard sale shoppers are wheelers and dealers and like cheap stuff. Good Luck

Yep, be prepared to go down on your prices, but hey, a little money is better than none, right? One thing I learned is to put up LOTS of signs in and around the neighborhood, advertise on Craigs List, and in the paper - people who go to these things check the paper and Craigslist all of the time to see where the good sales are. You can even post a teaser with some pics of items. Good luck! I'm actually pulling together one as well, trying to get it in before it gets too cold.
